Obento madness - Sat 27 Feb
Learn to pack an authentic Japanese lunchbox
If you are just sitting down to the same old boring sandwich for lunch again and wished there was a food fairy to give you inspiration for an exciting new lunch combos, look no further. Whilst we can’t promise you a fairy (Jamie Oliver is very busy girl you know) we can promise you inspiration for a healthier tastier approach to lunch.
Bento (obento is the honorific term) is basically a meal served in box. It can come in a take out version from a specialty bento-ya or lovingly prepared at home and taken to work, school or picnic.
Food prepared for the bento can be as simple as rice and one dish or more elaborate like a mini midday degustation. The emphasis is always on preparing a nutritionally balanced meal that not only tastes good but presents beautifully.
In this one-hour tour de force we will attempt to make a whole weeks worth of obento (hence the madness). Of course there will be the regular Q&A and recipe handouts.
Currently we are scouring Japan to find a selection of cool lunchboxes for you to take home and fill.
