For centuries Kiri wood (made from the paulownia tree) has been used to make boxes to house prized possessions. It was once a custom to plant a Paulownia tree when a daughter was born and present a chest made from the wood on her wedding day. Kiri wood is very light with a fine grain and is resistant to warping. It also has a very fragrant smell that is said to ward off insects.
On an ecological note, paulownia is fast growing and self-regenerating after harvest. It is a high emitter of oxygen and is used to rehabilitate soils that are contaminated or stripped of nutrient.
This kiri wood box is handmade in Seki, Japan and is makes a beautiful giftbox for a single knife. The words 御料理包丁 - o ryouri bouchou (kitchen knife) Are emblazoned on the box lid so there is no mistake what precious item is inside.
